He received his Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon (UTL). He is a Research Scientist at the University of Lisbon (IST/UL). His main R&D field is stone Decay and Conservation in the built environment. Digital Image Processing and Analysis; Mathematical Morphology; Quantitative Microscopy; Petrophysics; Petrography; Mineralogy and Geochemistry are other domains of specializations. Non-destructive (NDT), Contact-free, 2D/3D Image Analysis- based Technologies for Stone Decay and Conservation are presently his primarily research activity/interest. Teaching experience has been accumulated in Mining Engineering graduation (at IST/UTL), Master Courses/Degree (MSc) in Rehabilitation and Conservation of Built Heritage (at IST/UTL); in Chemical Applied to Cultural Heritage at University of Lisbon (UL), in Ph.D. co-orientation in Geology with Brazilian colleagues from the Federal University of Ceará-Fortaleza, Brazil (UFC).
