The XX National Meeting of Geological and Mining Engineers was held in Viseu at the end of January 2025. The event, centered on "Communication in the Exploration of Geological Resources", provided a platform for professionals and students to engage in discussions on key topics such as resource exploration, geotechnics, and environmental management.
Professor José Cardoso Guedes from CERENA-FEUP delivered a talk on managing conflicts in mineral resource exploration and public infrastructure development. Drawing on over 40 years of experience in the extractive industry, his presentation addressed issues such as conflicts with local communities, balancing safety with defense zones, and fostering local synergies. He showed examples of managing an urban extraction unit and involvement in the A24 highway construction, highlighting the importance of embracing risk, innovation, and the value of mineral resources in projects that benefit the collective interest.
