Leonardo Azevedo at Ciência Viva's 'O Espaço à Quarta' : Can plastic in the ocean be seen from space?
Next Wednesday, May 31st, at 7 pm, at 'Espaço à Quarta' there will be a debate on the detection of plastic in the Ocean by high-resolution satellite systems, combined with new Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms under the motto: How can satellites observe the Earth and detect the garbage in the Ocean?
In the session that marks the end of the 3rd edition of "O Espaço à Quarta" there will be a reflection on the contributions of satellite systems to mitigate and monitor the garbage that is found on the surface of the Ocean.
To talk about this topic, we invited a panel of specialists from different areas of knowledge, composed by Leonardo Azevedo (Centre for Natural Resources and Environment, IST), Vasco Mantas (Earth Observation Laboratory, University of Coimbra), André Valente (Atlantic International Research Center ) and Paula Sobral (MARE – Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences, FCT NOVA).
Leonardo Azevedo is the PI of SMART Project, the winner of AI Moonshot Challenge. SMART project objective is to develop a numerical tool to predict the space-time evolution of plastic debris. More details can be found at the Project webpage here .
