InTheMED Kick-off Meeting “Innovative and sustainable groundwater management in the Mediterranean”
CERENA researchers’ Leonardo Azevedo, Maria João Pereira, Manuel C. Ribeiro, and Amilcar Soares belong to the consortium of InTheMED project “Innovative and sustainable groundwater management in the Mediterranean” funded by PRIMA R&D program in water and agriculture in the Mediterranean funded by the European program H2020.
The Kick-off of the Project took place 28th April with the presence of all partners and a representative of the PRIMA program.
Leonardo Azevedo, the Portuguese coordinator of the project, considers that This will be an excellent opportunity to meet all the partners of the project and start devising the strategies and actions needed to reach the ambitious goals of InTheMed.
The objective of the InTheMED project is to develop a web decision support platform that allows aquifer users to know the impact of their actions on underground resources. CERENA will contribute with the generation of innovative tools to model groundwater aquifers. This tool will allow aquifer users (irrigation communities, public administrations, environmental entities or water management companies) to predict the evolution of the system and the impact of their actions on underground resources. The project will be developed in 5 pilot study cases distributed within the participating countries. In Portugal we will study the Castro Verde aquifer in association with SOMINCOR.
According to Leonardo Azevedo “this project is an opportunity for CERENA to demonstrate its state-of-art methods in modelling spatial phenomena in a key topic for the future such as groundwater management”.
The consortium, coordinated by Prof. Jaime Gómez-Hernandez from IIAMA UPV, counts with the expertise of researchers from different research centers and universities from Spain, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey.
The PRIMA Program (2018-2028) is sponsored by the Mediterranean Research and Innovation Foundation seeks to improve water availability and sustainable agricultural production in the Mediterranean region, financed by the participating countries* (currently € 274M) and the H2020 program (€ 220M).
