'AI for Climate and Energy’ joint laboratory

On October 9, Instituto Superior Técnico and China University of Petroleum-Beijing (CUPB) signed an agreement to establish the "AI for Climate and Energy" laboratory. The ceremony, held at IST’s Alameda campus, was attended by Chinese Ambassador Zhao Bentang. The collaboration, which began in 2014, marks a milestone in their partnership. The lab, co-led by Liao Zonghu of CUPB and Leonardo Azevedo, aims to advance carbon-neutral technology and climate science through AI and spatial data science to better understand Earth’s complex systems, such as climate and energy. The agreement also seeks to foster economic and clean energy cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, with both institutions highlighting the value of international cooperation in addressing global energy needs and climate challenges.
