Técnico Nightjar Annotiathon

Can you put a nightjar inside a jar? We sure can, and now we need your help to get it out – one annotation at a time!

On the night of 13^th (starting at 5 pm) to 14^th (planned to finish at 7 am) November 2026, at Técnico Innovation Center (TIC), we will host the first Técnico Nightjar Annotiathon – an annotation contest of bird images joining science, artificial intelligence, and a memorable night!

The goal is simple: annotate the highest number of bird images.  You have to identify the bounding box and four anatomical points (the center of the two eyes, the beak, and the crown of the head). These annotations will facilitate the creation of a scientific database for the study of the movement of birds’ heads, with applications in uncovering inner-ear mechanics, evolution, robotics, artificial intelligence, animation, and video games.

How does it work?
-Participants should group in teams of two;
-The members of each team can rotate among themselves during the event;
-There’s no need for previous programming skills;
-The images will be manually annotated on the Supervisely platform;
-Some anatomical points will be previously indicated. The teams should identify and correct them;
-Each correctly annotated image will give points to the team;
-A jury will evaluate the anatomical precision of the annotations;
-A general referee will ensure the quality and equality of the contest;
-There will be food and drinks available during the event;
-The team with the highest score wins. The winning team gets 1000€, the second place 500€, and the third place 250€.

Um noitibó entrou num frasco. Agora precisamos de ti para transformar o caos em ciência.

Baralhado? É que na noite de 13 (a começar pelas 17h) para 14 (planeado terminar pelas 7h) de Novembro, no TIC, Técnico, Arco do Cego, terá lugar o Técnico Nightjar Annotiathon, um concurso de anotação de imagens de aves que combina ciência, inteligência artificial, e uma noite memorável!

O objectivo é simples: anotar correctamente o maior número possível de imagens de aves, identificando as respectivas bounding boxes e quatro pontos anatómicos da cabeça: o centro dos dois olhos, a ponta do bico e o topo da coroa. Estas anotações irão contribuir para a criação de uma base de dados científica destinada ao estudo dos movimentos da cabeça das aves, com aplicações no conhecimento do ouvido interno, evolução, robótica, inteligência artificial, animação e videojogos.

Como funciona?
-A participação é feita em equipas de duas pessoas;
-Os membros de cada equipa podem alternar entre si ao longo do evento;
-Não é necessária experiência em programação;
-As imagens serão anotadas manualmente na plataforma Supervisely;
-Alguns pontos anatómicos estarão previamente posicionados, cabendo às equipas verificá-los e corrigi-los;
-Cada imagem corretamente concluída contará para a classificação;
-Um júri avaliará a precisão anatómica das anotações;
-Um árbitro geral assegurará a qualidade e a equidade do concurso;
-Haverá comida e bebidas durante o evento;
-Ganha a equipa com mais pontos, ganhando um prémio de 1000€. O segundo classificado ganha um prémio de 500€ e o terceiro de 250€.
