CERENA Seminar - May

Hybrid: presential at Técnico and FEUP & Zoom |

CERENA seminars are back!

On May 30 at 2:30pm, we will have the following talks:

Geomorphological mapping of the continental shelf of Northeast Brazil: experiences and perspectives

Abstract: The Continental Shelf has great importance in the study of coastal evolution. The knowledge of its geomorphology becomes of great relevance in the analysis of environmental phenomena and serves as a subsidy for the elaboration of several studies of the physical environment. This lecture aims to present Brazilian experiences and trends in updating the geomorphological mapping of a section of the continental shelf in Northeast Brazil, with the support of geotechnologies.

c

Paulo Victor do Nascimento Araújo (IFRN): Bachelor in Fisheries Engineering, Specialist in Environmental Analysis and Geoprocessing, Master and Doctor in Geodynamics and Geophysics. Develops work in the areas of fisheries resources, marine mapping and flooding with the support of geotechnologies. Since 2013, he is a professor at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) and leader of the Research Group on Environmental Analysis, Modeling and Geoinformation (PAMGEIA).

Statistical Approaches for Surface Water Quality Assessment, Ave River Basin Case Study

Abstract: Surface water quality is endangered by point source and diffuse emissions. Under a statistical approach, multiple pollution indicators were statistically associated with surface water parameters for Ave River Basin.  This river basin has been heavily polluted for decades, mainly due to point source emissions. Still, it was possible to find stronger associations with diffuse indicators, mainly landscape metrics. Thereby, the results revealed that land use composition and configuration are a key to the improvement of surface water quality.

c

António Fernandes (CERENA-FEUP): António Fernandes has a master's degree in Environmental Engineering and a PhD in Agronomic and Forestry Sciences. During his PhD, he used geographic information systems to quantify pollution sources in sub-catchments. He developed statistical models to access the cause-effect interaction between point source pressures, diffuse emissions, and landscape metrics with surface water quality.

The event will be in a hybrid format in which the first talk will be held at IST and the second at FEUP. Both talks will be transmitted via zoom starting at 2:30 pm.

Date/Location: May 30, 2022 (Monday), Room C13 (Central Pavilion - Alameda).

Date/Location: May 30, 2022 (Monday), room F405, FEUP.
