The main goal of this subject is to give to the Chem. Eng. undergraduate students (2nd year of studies) an introduction to the spreadsheet solving the mass balance of chemical processes gathering some data from experimental work carried out in Lab. A small Chemical Process Case Study (different for each group) is use to illustrate the Excel spreadsheet facilities to obtain sensitivity analysis and graphs to describe the behaviour of some variables. The case study includes several units and one unit operation with a phase equilibria such as liquid-liquid, vapour- liquid or solid-liquid equilibrium. In the first approach the mass balance is solved using an ideal model to represent the phase equilibria. Some indicators are calculated with this approach such as the global yield and final components purity. In parallel an experimental work at the laboratory is carried out to obtain the experimental phase equilibria data and the corresponding curves. Afterwards the mass balance is recalculated in Excel using the experimental data obtained regarding the phase equilibria, thus the process indicators could be recalculated and compared with the initial values calculated using the ideal model approach. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.
